Das Modell 4003S basiert auf dem 4001S Bass und ist durch Ikonen wie Paul McCartney und Chris Squire bekannt geworden. Er kommt im Unterschied zum Modell 4003 ohne Korpus- und Griffbrett-Binding und weichere Korpus-Konturen sowie mit Dot Einlagen im Griffbrett. Zudem kommt der 4003S mit der regulären Rickenbacker Schaltung mit Mono Ausgang.
Das Modell 4003 und 4003S ab Baujahr 2017 kommt mit einem Griffbrett aus Caribbean Rosewood (Metopium Brownei) und unterliegt somit nicht den CITES Appendice 2 Auflagen.
